North Carolina Grower Evaluates Cottonseed Options for 2008
Glenn
Jones of Clinton, N.C., and consultant David Langston evaluated a dryland
plot with Stoneville® cotton seed varieties during an
extreme drought in 2007. Jones says he will use yield performance results
from this trial and additional insights from Langston to select the cottonseed
varieties he will plant in 2008.
“We didn’t think any of the cotton would do well this year,” Jones
says. “It was extremely dry. But despite the challenging conditions,
the yield and grade results were good.”
Jones
didn’t anticipate yields would average two bales per acre. However,
he was pleased when one of the top-yielding varieties in the trial — ST
4554B2RF — delivered a yield average of 1,328 lbs/A.
“Stoneville varieties perform well,” Jones says. “We
continue to plant ST 4554B2RF because it is a good cotton variety with
high yield potential. We like the early season vigor from these varieties,
and they’re easy to manage throughout the season.”
