South Carolina Grower Approaches Future with Optimism
Frank
Craven of Bishopville, S.C., stays on the cutting edge of cotton production
by evaluating future cottonseed varieties with on-farm trials. For 2008,
he will evaluate where new Stoneville® cotton seed ST
4498B2RF fits on his farm after the variety tied for the lead position
in his 2007 dryland trial. This variety had a yield average of 715 lbs/A
despite record-breaking drought.
“It was unbelievable to see a variety make anything this year,” Craven
says.
“We were 3 inches of rainfall from having the driest year on record,
so when varieties average 600 to 700 pounds per acre, we know we should
have something worth looking at.”
In
2008, Craven looks forward to testing the yield and quality potential
of ST 4498B2RF under a new set of circumstances. Seeing the variety withstand
the dry conditions and deliver top yields makes him hopeful about the
future.
“As a dryland producer, we must have varieties that can withstand
many weather situations,” Craven says. “Our future depends
on varieties consistently delivering high yields with quality.”
