Mississippi Grower Tests Replacement Varieties
Steven
Stoker embraces the evolution to cotton varieties with dual-gene insect-protection traits. The Duck Hill, Miss., grower plans to use results from on-farm trials to identify top-performing
varieties that will become his replacements in upcoming crop seasons.
“We are looking to Stoneville varieties while we transition to
Bollgard II/Roundup Ready Flex products,” Stoker said. “Stoneville
is a leader in developing varieties with traits that have high yield potential.
Our trial results are also showing improved fiber quality in the new offerings.”
Stoker
requires varieties with high yield and excellent fiber quality potential. Since ST 5242BR was introduced, Stoker has planted the variety on the majority of the farm’s dryland
acres because it consistently yields well.
“For 2008, we’ll
continue to plant ST 5242BR, but we’re increasing our share of acres
planted to new ST 5458B2RF and ST 4498B2RF,” Stoker said. “In
our 2007 trial, these varieties delivered yields of 2,128 and 2,052 pounds
per acre, respectively. Fiber quality was also excellent with both varieties
going into the loan at more than 54 cents.”
